Religious Education (RE)

Bardfield Academy

Meet Mrs Elder: Subject Lead for Religious Education (RE).

Hello! My name is Mrs Elder, and I am excited to be leading Religious Education

at our school.

Why I Love Religious Education.

Religious Education (RE), is one of the few subjects that lets you dive into the

‘Big Questions’ without a single right answer. It is all about thinking differently; as a philosopher, theologist or a scientist. It helps you understand why billions of people do what they do in the world around us. I love watching the discussions that come out of the different sessions each week, a place where children can give their own ideas and opinions in an environment that encourages respect and where they are listened to without worrying if their answers are right or wrong.

My Ambition for Our School.

My goal is to transform the curriculum into a rigorous, thought-provoking exploration of the human experience. I want our pupils to:

  • Respect all beliefs – a place where every religion is understood and respected through using the children’s own knowledge of their faith to support teaching and learning.
  • Inspire all members of the school community to engage in the different concepts and foster an environment where curiosity is prioritised.
  • Champion a high-standard, enquiry- based approach so that every child develops a greater understanding of the diversity in the world around us.

Religious Education isn’t just learning about the many religions of our world but the opportunity to navigate a multi-faith world with confidence and respect.

Mrs Elder- RE Lead

Our RE Curriculum

At Bardfield, RE is taught to ensure that it encourages pupils to explore, develop and support their own beliefs and values. It also encourages pupils to have a knowledge of and develop acceptance for the faith, beliefs and values of others. RE supports the ideas, attitudes and values which are fundamental in every aspect of school life. The RE curriculum embeds the importance of developing pupils spiritually, morally, culturally and academically whilst promoting their curiosity through “Big Questions.”

High-quality RE lessons at Bardfield aim to enable pupils of all abilities and stages of development to:

  • support pupils’ religious literacy.
  • be religiously literate so that pupils will have the ability to hold balanced and well-informed conversations about religion and worldviews
  • be able to make sense of religion and worldviews around them and begin to understand the complex world in which they live.
  • to become free thinking, critical participants of public discourse, who can make academically informed judgements about important matters of religion and belief which shape the global landscape
  • to promote the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils at the school and of society.
  • Prepare pupils at the school for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.
