Physical Education (PE)

Bardfield Academy

Meet Mrs Fowlie-Burns: Subject Lead for Physical Education (PE)

Hello! My name is Mrs Fowlie-Burns, and I am thrilled to be leading Physical Education at Bardfield Academy.

Why I Love PE

My passion for the subject comes from my lifelong love of movement and competitions whether that’s running for West Sussex Running Team, playing ice hockey or performing in dance shows. Whether I’m out for a run with my dog Jet (I’m not fast enough to catch him yet), cycling with my family on countryside adventures, or being part of a team on the field, I’ve always found that being active is the best way to feel energised and focused.

I love how sport has the power to bring people together, teach us resilience, respect and shows us what we can achieve when we work as a team. For me, the “game” is more than just a place to play—it’s where we learn some of life’s most important lessons.

My Ambition for Our School

My goal is to help every child become “Physically Literate” and confident in their own abilities.

I want our pupils to:

Find Their Passion: Discover a wide range of sports and activities, from traditional team games to individual fitness, finding what makes them move with a smile.

Build Healthy Habits: Understand the vital connection between physical activity and mental wellbeing, learning how to look after their bodies for life.

Develop Character: Use sport to grow in confidence, learn the value of fair play, and develop the grit to keep going when things get tough.

PE isn’t just about winning trophies or coming first; it’s about the story of what your body and mind can achieve together.

Physical Education (PE) at Bardfield Academy

Our Vision

At Bardfield Academy, we aim to ignite a lifelong love of being active for all our children. PE at Bardfield helps to create memorable sporting experiences that inspire children to challenge themselves and express their potential through movement and physical education. Our carefully sequenced progressive curriculum empowers the children to build fundamental physical literacy while discovering various sports, health and well-being, and a wide range of athletic skills.

Our Approach

We deliver Physical Education with energy and enthusiasm, offering high-quality, practical opportunities for every child to be an athlete. Starting in the Early Years, we build the foundations of coordination, balance, and agility. As children progress, they engage in a diverse range of disciplines—including athletics, gymnastics, dance, team sports, and outdoor adventurous activities. Alongside physical practice, pupils are encouraged to reflect on their own performance and that of others—celebrating successes, demonstrating sportsmanship, and identifying areas for growth. Our staff nurture confidence, encourage a growth mindset, model resilience and sportsmanship while teaching pupils that discipline, teamwork, and the journey of improvement are just as valuable as the final score!

Our Purpose

PE is a space for every child to challenge themselves and grow without limits. We celebrate every student’s progress, building the self-esteem they need to showcase their unique physical talents. By introducing pupils to various sports, influential athletes, and the importance of healthy living, we open doors to future pathways in professional sports, coaching, physiotherapy, nutrition, and beyond. All of this becomes the foundation for healthy living.
